Blue-Winged Olive Dry

Blue-Winged Olive hatches occur throughout the year and sporadically throughout the day on the Guadalupe River. This traditional dry fly is perfect for matching the duns.

Tying Instructions

Thread 8/0 Olive
Hook Standard dry fly
Size #18-20
Tail Blue dun hackle fibers
Wings Blue dun hackle tips
Hackle Blue dun
Body Olive fur
  1. Smash barb and place hook in vise.
  2. Wrap hook from eye to bend with thread.
  3. Tie in several strands of blue dun hackle fibers to make tail. Tail should be length of hook shaft.
  4. Dub thread with fine olive fur dubbing and wrap hook two-thirds of the way back to hook eye.
  5. Tie in blue dun hackle by butt. Hackle fibers should be one and one-half times hook gap length.
  6. Tie in two blue dun hackle tips to make wings.
  7. Palmer hackle forward and tie off behind eye.
  8. Whip-finish and cement head.
